Men's Day Results for April 26th 2014

Another great day for our MGA.  Not a cloud in the sky and temperatures reaching the low 80's.  Nice!  We had a good showing with 19 players today.  The format was the usual skins, stableford, best 3's & 5's and the last chance to get into Dave Hall's pocket with the beat the pro game.

The top dog in every game today was Steve Dougherty who dominated the back 9 with a scorching 6 under par 30 coming in.  What a back 9 for him!  He crushed his quota by 14 points on his way to accumulating 48 total points!  wow!  He also took home first place gross in the 3's and 5's game with a score of 28.  I guess that eagle on 15 helped him a bit don't you think?  Being the top skins winner with 4 total skins was not to shabby either but the feather in his cap for him I am sure is that he was one of only 3 players to beat the pro.
The net portion of the 3's and 5's had a traffic jam at the front of the pack with 4 players ending up tied for the top spot.  Steve Ahlfeld, Steve Points, Ray Deaton and Patrick Butler all got a share of the winners pot in the net with a score of 31.  Two of those players were also lucky enough to be the other two players that bested the pro today.  Congrats guys.  Check out the results sheet for complete details on all the skins and other players that bested their stableford point quota.  There will be no MGA next Saturday due to the Kentucky Derby Scramble.  Feel free to sign up for that event.  We will have Mixed and Men's divisions with a 1:00 pm shotgun start and a nice social afterwards while you watch the run for the roses.  Thanks to everyone who played this week and as this was my final official Men's Day I want to thank all National Members for a very memorable 17 years here at the club.  It has been a great ride and I can't thank all of the National Members enough for letting me share it with you.

All the best,

Dave

MGA results 4-12

Gentlemen,

Perfect weather and perfect greens made it a good day to score well which ended up being the case.  Ray Deaton dominated the net games with a sparkling 66 which helped him to a +8 stableford points and 1st in the pick a pro game.  Steve Ahlfeld also put in a solid showing with +8 on his points and a tie for1st in the pick a pro even though Bubba Watson let him down.  Ken Bass on the other hand selected well with Matt Kuchar helping him to a tied 1st in the gross.
Honorable mentions also go to Ron Coffman and Jim Blank who also smashed through their points quota with a +7.
Here are the results in full:

Thanks to all those that played!

Men's Day Results for April 5th 2014

Glorious day for golf on our first Men's Day of April 2014.  The drill this week was tee times for the guys and the games were the usual skins, stableford, beat the pro with the best 17 game rounding out the foursome.  We had 16 total players this week enjoying the spring weather.

In the skins game we had Steve Ahlfeld, Tom Boals Jr., and Mark Watson leading the pack with two skins each followed by a large pack of players who had one skin (see results sheet for info).

The stableford game had very few points out this week and you know what that means right?  Big Money for points!  The top point getter was sweat swinging Steve Schwerin.  His masterful short game and steady putting stroke helped him best his quota by 3 points earning him the top spot and a heap full of cash!

The Best 17 game had two groups of winners with the Net & the Gross pulling cash from the pot.  The Gross side had some familiar names on it with Fabian Alzamora taking the top spot with his score of 75.  Tied for second we had the always steady Steve Ahlfeld and the long driving John Doster who both fired a 76.  The net division was championed by Bill Fitzgerald.  Birdie Bill carded a very impressive 62 to best his nearest competitor by 3 strokes.  Second place was taken by today's leading money winner Steve Schwerin and rounding out the final paying spot was the traveling man Don Hearn.

The pro had a rough start to the season and was bested by nearly half the field.  Check the results sheet for more details.

Next week we will be a shotgun start at 9:00am.  It is Masters week as you know so the format will be Pick a Pro from the Masters field on Saturday and combine his score with your net score. The weather forecast is for 77 and sunny so be there or be square.

Men's Day Results for March 22nd

What a day for golf!  We had a great showing today with 28 players enjoying the 78 degree day here at National.  The format for the day was skins, stableford and best 4's net & gross.  The big winner in our Stableford game was Mark Watson.  He crushed his quota by 10 points!  Maybee the financial windfall he will receive for that will ease the pain of his Wolfpack being bounced out of the tournament.  I wonder if Mark can make a free throw?  The man with the most skins today was non other than Giff Fisher.  He had three total  by making back to to back birdies on the 14th & 15th holes.  The final game was the best 4's game where you throw out your scores on the par 3's and 5's.  Our winner in the net portion of that was Dave "harpscat" Harper who turned in a tidy score of 35 which was 5 under par for that event.  The gross champion of the day was Steve Ahlfeld.  Steve is no stranger to the winners circle here and his score of 41 bested the second place finisher, which Jerry Seinfeld calls the first place loser, by 1 shot.  Check out the results sheet below for all the other people who earned a bit of cash today in the games.  Next week we will have a shotgun start at 10 am so be there or be square.

Best,

Dave

Promotion & Operation of MGA Events:
We had a very good conversation of what we could do going forward to improve participation in all MGA & Club events that involve golf.  Here are some of the main topics discussed for potential implementation this year.

  1. Callaway Cup-  This would be a year long event where MGA members would be given points for each event participated in and when 10 points are accumulated that individual would get an entry into the year end drawing for a new set of irons.  We are hoping to get additional prizes so we can have 1st - 5th place prizes.  The points awarded would vary based on event for example the Men’s Day play would be worth 1 point,  Club Championship would be worth 5 points and so on.  These point values are not set yet but we will have an information bulletin posted and emailed out to all MGA members with specific details about this program.

  1. Member Ambassador for each event-  This was brought up to have at least one member for our major events involved in the planning and promotion of each event.  What we would like to do is make past years Champions be the ambassador for that event in the upcoming year.  This is obviously open for suggestions but all who were in attendance thought it to be a good idea.

  1. Communication-  This was discussed at length and it is at the top of the get it done list for this years MGA board.  One aspect the MGA would like to improve is transparency.  It is important to get current and relevant information out to the MGA members in a timely and consistent manner.  One of the avenues of communication is the MGA blog which has many items of current and past information on it.  Dave Hall is working to make this a better and more relevant form for getting all of your MGA info.  MGA board discussed how to better get the info from the blog and one way suggested was to enter your email in the “follow by email” box on the left side of the blog as you scroll down the page.  This is the best way to follow because you will get an email every time the blog is updated with new information.  The blog address is www.nationalgolfclubmga.blogspot.com

  1. Handicap Discussion-  Discussion was opened because there is continued efforts being put forward to make sure all the MGA events are fair and equitable.  One was to make sure of this is to make sure all members post their scores for every round they play whether it is 9 holes or 18 holes.  Our handicap system is capable of saving your 9 hole score and combining it with another.  Dave Dunn was appointed as the Handicap Chairman and will work closely with Dave Hall in assuring all MGA members that we are doing everything we can to make sure Members are posting scores.  The MGA bylaws are being amended and will be resubmitted for approval to indicate penalties for non posting of scores.
