Fire & Ice Capture Men's Member/Member Championship

What a weekend for Championship golf at National Golf Club.  We had the Men's Member-Member Championship and it was a nail biter for both the gross and the net division.  The field was 14 two man teams competing for the crystal and that coveted invite to the 2013 Champions Dinner.  Day one format was 9 holes of Captains Choice and 9 holes of Modified Alternate Shot.  Day two format was best ball of the two player team.

The Championship division (gross) was a close race with Two time defending Champions Steve Dougherty and Pat Butcher taking the first day lead with the score of 68.  Close on their heals though were many worthy champions including the Fire & Ice duo of Ron Coffman and Peter Vanica.  Their score of 70 put them in solo second place and poised for a potential unseating of the defending champs!  After 9 holes on the final day the two shot lead that Dougherty & Butcher enjoyed was erased by Fire & Ice posting 35 for their inward 9 holes.  The two teams (who were paired together) were tied with just 9 holes to play!  Both teams started with birdie on 10 but the defending champs faltered a bit with bogey on 11 giving F&I a one shot lead through 11.  Dougherty and Butcher quickly tied things back up with a very handy birdie on the 13th then took the lead with birdie on the 15th.  With only 3 holes to play and one shot down Coffman and Vanica roared back into the lead with back to back three's on the 16th and 17th.  Fire & Ice both made par on the last which was good enough for the one shot victory and their first Member/Member Championship.  Congrats to Ron & Peter.

In the net side of things we also had some past dominant players lurking about trying to win another Championship.  After the first day of play we had four different teams less than 3 shots apart so it was any ones ball game.  Day one leader was the squad of Eddie Bray and Philip Bailey who are no strangers to winning this championship.  The three time champions posted a 60.5 for their day one score which was only 3/4 of a shot clear of the duo of Steve Ahlfeld and  Mark Watson.  On the final day of competition the conditions were a little tougher due to some overnight rain showers and the wind kicking up a bit.  It started out as a bit of a horse race between 4 teams but the team of Ahlfeld and Watson won it going away with a blistering final day score of 63!  They bested the second place team which were the day one leaders by almost 4 shots.  Congrats to Steve and Mark who captured their first Member-Member Championship.  We will see you at the Champions Dinner.

We had a few special event holes and some team skins on the last day and here are the results:
Closest to the hole #2 - Steve Dougherty

Closest to the hole #17 - William Rocchi

MGA Results 9-7-13

We had nine guys show up for the fun and festivities today. The weather was great and so was the golf. The format was the usual Beat the Pro, Stableford and it was double skins today because of some late cancellations.

The skins game was dominated by Peter Vanica who captured 6 skins on his way to shooting 35 on the front nine. John Masotti won 4 skins to take home the second most skins. He was closely followed by birdie Bill Fitzgerald who had 3 skins and Pat Butcher with 2 skins.

The stableford game had John Masotti take the top spot besting his quota by 4 points. Steve Ahlfeld came in a close runner up beating his quota by 2 points. They were the only two players to beat the pro today as the pro had a much better day on links compared to weeks past.

Thanks to all the participants for playing. We hope to see you all again next week.

Labor Day Tough Day September 2nd 2013

We had 13 brave souls come out yesterday to put their money where their mouth is.  The competed in the annual Labor Day Tough Day competition.  This year we had the Stroke play event with a twist and the skins game.  The twist in the Stroke play event was if you played back a tee you got two extra blows and if you went all the way back you received five additional pops!  You were able to take these strokes in not only the net side but the gross side as well.

The low shooter in the Gross division was our defending club Champion William Rocchi.  The Rock fired any 81 but since he pegged it up from all the way back he was able to take 5 shots of that score and ended up with a final score of 76.  In second place was Buzz "Air Tool" Baughard.  He carded an 82 from the Gold tees.  With his two bonus shots he was able to score 80 and take solo second.  Nice work Guys.  The first place prize was $40 in pro shop credit and second collected $25.  Great work guys!

In the net division we had smooth swinging Steve Schwerin carding a very impressive net 68 to take the first place spot by 3 strokes over his nearest competitor.  Steve was the picture of consistency out there by shooting identical scores on the front and the back.  The second place winner was Van Warren.  He posted a very respectable net 71 to take home his part of the winners pie.  1st place was $40 in shop credit with 2nd paying out $25.

The skins game had 14 total skins paid out each worth $10.  Six on the gross side and eight on the net side.  Buzz Baughard and Van Warren took the lions share of the skins with four skins each.  Buzz had a nice birdie on the difficult 4th hole to take home a net and gross skin there and followed it up with a birdie on eleven for another two bagger (net & gross skin).  Van had his on the 9th with birdie and they 18th with a par.  Each of his skins were also net & gross.  Can you believe that only one person made par on the 18th? William Rocchi had a birdie on the 15th that was good for both net & gross skins. To round out he skins game Steve Schwerin made net skins on the 5th and 8th holes for his two skins.  Todd Ray made a net skin on the 2nd and Andy Summers was the only player to birdie ten which earned him a gross skin.  Well done to all the skin winners!

Thanks again for playing in this event.  I hope you had some fun with the interesting hole locations.

Best,

Dave
